OIC :). A chesty character. Any insight into how you went from the concept to pixel art?

MrPajamaPants responds:

Wow, interesting question!

In terms of "designing" the character, I had her look pretty thought out in my head already. She's inspired by characters like Excella Gionne from Resident Evil 5, and Lien Neville from King of Fighters, so I knew from the get-go that she would be some sort of busty CEO, but I had no idea what her hair/skin/outfit color would be.

I played around with her being dark-skinned but didn't really find a color combination with an outfit that I truly liked. I eventually settled on her being fair-skinned, blonde, with a green dress. I wanted to convey the fact that her world is a near-future cyberpunk world, and the world consists of a lot of hard angled shapes. This is mostly because the company she owns is very influential and I want to connect her very personality to the world's appearance.

So, even though I love to draw sexy characters I try to sincerely tell a story with their design and do my best to put some thought into why they look the way they look, and how it can elevate a greater idea like a story for a movie or game.

When it comes to my literal "drawing" process, I actually begin by doing a line art sketch that eventually becomes the finalized illustration with outlines and color, and once the final illustration is done I move on to pixel art.

I sort of approach all my character art--whether it's pixel art or illustration--by blocking out the body parts/clothes. However, I don't do this with blocks of color like painters do, I actually do line art and then fill with color later. I'm really inspired by manga and the art for Capcom IP's like Street Fighter and Resident Evil, so I think that's where I get my love for line art.

When it comes to maintaining color consistency between the illustration and pixel art, I'll use the color pick tool on my illustration and then use those colors for the pixel art. Easier this way, though I suppose someone could do it the other way around just as easily.

Thanks for the question!

Yes, I'm perusing your older stuff too :). S'pose I'll need to check out your games to see animation?

Cyberdevil responds:

Or the movies, yes. ;) I don't think I have any animated art yet. Thanks for checking!

Wish I had this level of "just do it" creative energy. Good stuff bud. You might have to teach me your thinking approach for this kind of thing sometime. There's lots I'd like to say, but over complicate it often. I didn't even need the description to understand. Keep it up!

Cyberdevil responds:

Hmm it does seem like you do though, what with all the work you've been putting out thus far. :) Be happy to. Though I suppose the approach with these is almost shamefully simple - I usually just start drawing and see where it leads - oftentimes the lack of planning does show a bit in the motives. XD Sometimes it turns out well, sometimes a bit too predictable or simple I think! Complexity's a virtue; a desirable trait too in our sometimes overly simplified world; social outlet IMO.

Thank you!

Excuse me sir, but my local art gallery has **two** shades of black... =D. Have a +5 you cheeky person!

Cyberdevil responds:

It does for real - similar concepts? XD I see there's a paperback with that name too hmm...

Cheers; appreciate it!

I have no idea who cruises by painterly profiles to down-vote, but it's personally annoying watching cartoons pull 5/5 while anyone who goes line-less gets kicked around.

Have a +5 for this fascinating creature :). Wouldn't change a thing. Very inspiring!

MeltyCat responds:

Aww, thank you. <3

I admit, I was a little deflated seeing the rating drop so low. So it's much appreciated.

Utterly fearless use of colour :). That's freakin' great and very inspiring! I like that you aren't worried about details, yet still communicate form very clearly.

Letaug responds:

Thank you!

Hmm, you must've attracted the music voters on this site, who seem to enjoy troll voting (hah, I said it!). Have a bump in stars, this is really well done!

Marckel responds:

Thanks! I don't have a lot of experience in making album art, so a lower rating is understandable for me. It was a good learning experience though

A little late here, but I really like the idea behind this! Frankly, there's a lot of painter types that don't go far beyond this level of detail and they seem to do fine. Got any other bubbled creatures hiding in your pocket? =)

Marckel responds:

This is an old one but thanks for the review! I think this was from around the time I was looking at pictures of sunset/sunrise and clouds. The references helped a ton.

OK, let me explain. I don't make males, I don't understand anime/JRPG at all... but I still love this! You've managed to reach someone who has no clue and has totally different interests. Previous comments are definitely sincere. You know what you're doing. Nothing to say except: keep up the great work!

(...if I was forced at gunpoint to give critique, splash in one of your fearless backgrounds ;), I think this sort of character deserves a scene)

LadyKuki responds:

Aahhh thank you, haha. It's funny because my style leans to anime mostly due to how I like how the guys are drawn.

Anyway, fair critique! Backgrounds aren't my strong suit. To be fair, some of these pieces I've posted were made earlier on in the year while school was going on. After I'm done with a personal project of mine, I'm definitely looking towards adding more backgrounds to my pieces. I agree it adds a lot more to pieces! :D

I had to do a double take. IMO, huge leap forward while maintaining your style. Instant favourite.

PerKGrok responds:

Thanks. Glad you liked it. 🙂
